New Limited ‘Tour Edition Only’ Black Sabbath CD
by Jody Haskins for The Laguna Spectator January 14, 2016
Black Sabbath will have a limited edition tour CD with four new songs recorded by this version of Black Sabbath. Ozzy, Tony, Geezer and “Old Swingy Arms Whatshisface” acting like a fool on the drums.
Anytime I hear news of one of my favorite old bands coming out with some new studio recordings I can not help but have mixed emotions. How many times have we been let down. Usually the unreleased tracks are unreleased for a damn good reason, they suck. It is usually just a last gasp money grab on the part of a band biting the dust.
I remember how disappointed I was in those three tracks. Don’t get me wrong, they are more than serviceable Black Sabbath CD filler tracks. But none of the magic of ‘Heaven and Hell’ or ‘The Mob Rules’ was present in those recordings. Not that I am complaining. This did eventually lead to the reformation of Dio era Black Sabbath in the ‘Sharon Osbourne Approved’ name of Heaven and Hell.
Now that was a kick ass CD and if you haven’t heard it, I suggest you get right on that. That is why I am cautiously optimistic about this new Material. Black Sabbath is releasing this ‘bonus’ CD and selling it exclusively at their live concerts.
This disc will include four new songs that were recorded with producer Rick Rubin during the sessions for their last studio album ’13’. The disc will also feature never before released live songs from the ’13’ world tour and a recording of “Under the Sun” from The Black Sabbath CD Vol. 4.
Track by Track Breakdown
1. “Season of the Dead” A hard and heavy guitar and bass riff with some marching drums lead into a classic Ozzy vocal performance. A song about tin soldiers marching off to war and not knowing what they are fighting for. Classic mood, theme, lyrics and groove. I give this song 5 upside down crosses!
2. “Cry All Night” Starts off pretty much sounding like the exact same song you just heard. My gut tells me this one will be a filler track. Uh Oh! I was dead wrong. When you least expect it, Tony Iommi comes out with a guitar tone and sound that he has never unleashed before. Of course Ozzy comes through with a solid lyrical and vocal performance.
3. “Take Me Home”
More sublime lyrics sung to perfection by Ozzy Osbourne. Instrumentally this is a fairly standard plodding heavy Black Sabbath song….at first. Then Geezer Butler starts to emerge from the background with a really groovy deep bass solo right in the middle of the song. This bass virtuoso is quickly followed by some acoustic finger picking from Mr. Iommi that sounds like it came right off Vol. 4 or Masters of Reality.
4. “Isolated Man”
I knew it was too good to last. Check out this last song, it is a real CLUNKER!
What do you think about the new Black Sabbath 4 Track Tour Edition CD? Do you agree or disagree with my assessment of this last collection of Black Sabbath songs.
Here is one last bonus track from the 13 CD just to add one more track to this new Black Sabbath Playlist.
