Destruction, Greed and Disloyalty on Parade
by Jody Haskins for The Laguna Spectator
Appetite For Destruction is one of the best heavy metal albums of the 1980’s. It is a masterpiece that sounds just as vital today as the day it was released. Musical magic concocted by a very specific group of unique personalities. So when a fan of Guns n’ Roses hears the rumors of a reunion tour, the Appetite for Destruction lineup is the only one they want and expect to see.
Remember how huge the KISS tour was in 1996 when Ace Frehley and Peter Criss rejoined the band? That is the real reunion that the long suffering Guns n’ Roses fans want and deserve. That is not what the fans are getting. What they are getting is a half assed reunion with real reunion prices.
Guns n Roses have put a $2,500 price tag on their “Signature VIP Experience” at their shows on April 8 and April 9 at the new T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. These shows will take place before headlining California’s Coachella Music And Arts Festival on April 16 and April 23.
I know what you are thinking. “What a bunch of greedy pricks, $2500 to meet the band backstage is just ridiculous.” You would be right in that they are a bunch of greedy pricks, but you would be wrong to assume that $2,500 price tag provides you the opportunity to meet the band because it doesn’t. According to The Pulse Of Radio, the package does include one ticket in the first ten rows, a signed, numbered, limited-edition tour poster, a photo on the stage before the show, a backstage tour, pre-show cocktails, access to a VIP hospitality lounge, a dinner buffet and drinks, prizes, private merchandise shopping and the “Essential Guns N’ Roses VIP Gift Bag,” including special merchandise and a commemorative VIP laminate and matching lanyard.
To make matters worse, Axl, Slash and Duff will not include Izzy Stradlin and Steven Adler in this bogus reunion.
Please indulge my this fantasy sequence:
I can imagine the conversation between Axl and Slash went something like this: “Why give the fans what they want, do the right thing and reunite the original Appetite For Destruction lineup? If we do that we have to split the money five ways. I think we should just screw Izzy and Adler and split the money three ways instead. Slash replied “I don’t know man that just sounds like a greedy dick move to me. Then again that is a lot of money….hmmm let me call Sharon Osbourne and see what she thinks we should do.”
Never underestimate the power of greed. Greedy bastards will always find a way to keep money in their pockets and out of yours. They do this at any cost with no shame. We see it in the most recent Black Sabbath tours and their refusal to give Bill Ward a square deal to tour, record and drum for his own damn band. We have seen it off and on for decades with KISS and now we have Guns n’ Roses ready to bow to the almighty dollar and piss on their fans and their former band mates.
I think I will pass on attending the 2016 Guns n Roses Gouge fest. Even if I wanted to go, the cheapest tickets are $250 plus fees. I might have paid $100 or so if it was the real “Appetite For Destruction” lineup. However, for this half assed cash grab I wouldn’t pay more than $50 for good seats.
In comparison look at what you get from Ace Frehley’s VIP experience:
Now you might say I can’t compare seeing Ace Frehley to seeing Guns n’ Roses. Well I say I can because Ace is only worth that $350 because he is not in a reunited KISS. By the same logic, this semi-reunion of Guns n’ Roses might be worth $500. Certainly not $2500. Especially when that $2,500 doesn’t even buy you any merchandise, good seats or a chance to meet the band and get an autograph
Here is a nice video that sums up my feelings and more. This guy does a great Cartman impression. Enjoy and peace out.
