Led Zeppelin Bootleg CD ‘Swiss Made’ Recording Is A Slice of Heaven
by Jody Haskins for The Laguna Spectator
Led Zeppelin Bootleg CD: Swiss Made. This is a rare double CD soundboard recording of Led Zeppelin from their 1980 tour just before the untimely demise of drummer John Bonham. Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones and John Bonham prove they still had it right up until the very end. Too bad Bonham had to pass away so young. I would have been interesting to see the kind of Albums Led Zeppelin would have put out in the 80s and 90s and even today. Here is the story of how I found this rare Led Zeppelin CD set.
This Led Zeppelin bootleg CD set was produced by Turtle Records of Australia in 1992. I found this CD Set at ‘Vinyl Solutions’ record store on the strip in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. I was on a sales trip for my coin laundry business. Back in those days I would drive my Lincoln Mark VI, silver in color just like the one James Bond drove in ‘License to Kill’. I know it was Timothy Dalton/James Bond and I am sure it is the absolute worst Bond car ever….but who cares, I had a Bond car for the first and probably last time in my life.
Anyway I always goofed off a little on these trips so that I could make them last the whole day and have a little fun. In this case, I parked the Lincoln behind the Sigma Nu House on University Boulevard and walked to the “strip”. Back in the old days, the strip was just a few stores and bars. There was Gallettes which was the Greek Fraternity & Sorority hangout. Needless to say, I never went there. There was also a bar called “The Booth”. The booth was a real last stop dive with a small stage and a few pool tables. The most memorable thing about the Booth was the ever present aroma of vomit and pine sol. This awful smell permeate the walls and carpet of this fine establishment.
There was also a record store on the strip called Vinyl Solutions. It was a great 70s & 80’s landmark. A college record store right in the middle of the strip in Tuscaloosa. Anyway on this particular day, I was browsing the record and CD collection and came across this rarity.
This one Led Zeppelin Bootleg CD caught my attention. I knew I had never seen it before and it was in a very unusual long cardboard glossy case. I bought it and listed to it in my car as I drove around Tuscaloosa and back to Birmingham that afternoon. I guess I listed to both CD’s twice. They are good but not great in terms of production. I love the song selection, it contains rare live recordings such as ‘Train Kept A Rollin’, ‘In The Evening’, ‘All of My Love’, ‘Hot Dog’, ‘Trampled Under Foot’ and my personal favorite Led Zeppelin song of all time ‘Nobody’s Fault But Mine’. From time to time over the years, I have played this CD and I really enjoyed it. It was my favorite live Led Zeppelin recording up until the CD release of the 2007 O2 reunion concert. However in spite of falling to second place, this CD will always hold a special place in my collection. If you can find it, I recommend you get it.
